NASA needs 13 new astronauts

NASA is preparing to write history again as it prepares a new mission to graze the surface of Mars and beyond. This is the first time since 2011 that NASA is taking applications for astronaut positions, one of the most wanted jobs on the planet. Starting on Dec 14th through mid-February, applications will be accepted with the winning candidates announced in 2017.

Chief Administrator at NASA, Charles Bolden, says that this new generation of astronauts will help pave the way to put mankind on the surface of Mars. In his words: “This next group of American space explorers will inspire the Mars generation to reach for new heights, and help us realize the goal of putting boot prints on the Red Planet.”

Brian Kelly, Director of Flight Operations at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, said, “This is an exciting time to be a part of America’s human space flight program,” 

The requirements that NASA has listed to apply for the job are:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in engineering, biological science, physical science or mathematics (an advanced degree is desirable)
  • At least three years of related, progressively responsible professional experience -- OR at least 1,000 hours of pilot-in-command time in jet aircraft
  • Pass the NASA long-duration spaceflight physical exam.

There are really no surprises about the requirements presented by NASA for their astronauts. Presently, the active astronaut corps includes 47 members with more needed in the future for more deep space missions.

“Those selected for this service will fly on U.S. made spacecraft from American soil, advance critical science and research aboard the International Space Station, and help push the boundaries of technology in the proving ground of deep space,” says Brian Kelly.

There are actually several missions waiting for the lucky selected ones that include crewing space stations for six months and a 1-year mission of experimentations that will allow the development of better technology for space exploration.
